How to reset UKey hardware wallet

U
Written by UKey Wallet

This document is intended to guide users on how to securely erase local data (including private key cache and account configuration) in UKey hardware devices through system commands or underlying security mechanisms. Restore it to its factory initial state. This operation usually works for Forgot device PIN, Need to generate a new mnemonic phrase or Prepare to import other wallet backups business scenario.

Core security pre-confirmation:

  • Objective attributes of asset status: The balance of digital assets is actually recorded in the decentralized blockchain Ledger, rather than locally on the physical device. As long as you have the correct mnemonic phrase, you can regain control from any supported terminal.

  • Data backup verification: Before executing the reset command, please make sure that you have properly backed up the mnemonic phrase (Secret Recovery Phrase) of the current device. Once the device is reset, the internal data will be irreversibly and permanently destroyed.

  • Mnemonic Phrase Physical Isolation: Be sure to save your mnemonic phrase in a physical form (such as a UKey Seed titanium plate or paper record), Any form of electronic storage (such as screenshots, photo albums, cloud memos) or exposure to the network environment is strictly prohibited.

1. Hardware device reset process

Depending on whether you currently have access rights to the device, please select the corresponding operation path:

Scenario A: Have device access (PIN known)

This path is suitable for scenarios where reset is actively triggered. The following operations are done with UKey Core 26 Series For example:

  1. Start the UKey hardware device and enter the correct PIN to unlock the system.

  2. Navigate to the main interface [Settings] -> [Wallet].

  3. Scroll the menu to the bottom and select [Reset device], and confirm the execution of the erase command according to the on-screen prompts.

Scenario B: No device access (forgotten PIN)

This path achieves a forced reset by triggering the underlying protection mechanism of the hardware security chip.

  1. Entering an incorrect PIN multiple times in a row while the device is locked.

  2. When the number of consecutive errors reaches the system's safety fuse threshold (usually 5 or 10 times, depending on the specific device model and firmware version), the device will automatically trigger forced data erasure and restore itself to the factory settings.

2. Rebind UKey Wallet client

After the hardware device is successfully reset, the original device encryption pairing credentials will become invalid immediately. In order to restore digital asset management functionality, you must first unbind the old device record in the UKey Wallet software client and then establish a new connection.

Step 1: Clear old binding records

  1. Launch mobile or browser extensions UKey Wallet Client, enter password to unlock.

  2. Click on the main interface Wallet name, expand the list of currently associated accounts.

  3. Click on the top right of the list [Edit] button to enter management mode.

  4. Locate the corresponding hardware wallet item and click the "delete icon" next to it. After carefully reading the secondary confirmation warning that pops up from the system, select [Remove device].

Step 2: Establish a new communication connection

(Note: Before performing this step, please ensure that your hardware device has completed the initial settings after leaving the factory, such as generating or importing a mnemonic phrase.)

  1. Return to the account list interface of UKey Wallet client.

  2. Click [Add wallet].

  3. Select among connection options [Connect hardware wallet].

  4. Complete verification and secure pairing according to the communication interaction guidance that pops up in both directions on the client and hardware screens.
