Detailed explanation of mnemonics and private keys

What are mnemonic phrases and private keys?

  • Mnemonic Phrase (Recovery Phrase/Seed Phrase): It is a plain text representation of the private key, consisting of 12 to 24 words, following the BIP39 standard. It is the "master key" to the wallet and is used to restore all assets within the wallet.

  • Private Key: It is the underlying proof of asset ownership. Mastering the private key means having absolute control over the address assets.

Backup instructions

  • Software Wallet: Supports viewing mnemonic phrases or exporting private keys in UKey Wallet App at any time.

  • Hardware Wallet: For security reasons, the mnemonic phrase is only displayed once when the device is initialized. The hardware wallet does not provide the "export private key" function; if you need to check the mnemonic, please use the device's built-in "check mnemonic" function in conjunction with paper backup.

How to back up your mnemonic phrase

  1. Enter the wallet list: Click the menu button of the wallet avatar in the upper left corner of the UKey Wallet App (plug-in/desktop/mobile) and select "Settings".

2. Select target wallet: Click on the corresponding wallet entry and select "Backup".

3. Select backup method: It is recommended to select "Manual Backup". 4. Verification and Transcription: After entering the password, the mnemonic phrase will appear on the screen.

Security Suggestion: Please be sure to use physical media (such as paper and pen) to copy offline and keep it properly. Screenshots or photos are strictly prohibited.
